National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS)

The National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) is a world leading research centre dedicated to the advancement of atmospheric science, funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).

With an annual budget of £15M NCAS carries out research in air pollution, climate and high-impact weather, and long-term global changes in atmospheric composition and climate, and provides the UK community with state-of-the-art technologies for observing and modelling the atmosphere. These include a research aircraft, advanced ground-based observational facilities, computer modelling and support, and facilities for storing and analysing data. We play a significant and influential role in many international science programmes and provide the UK with advice, leadership and national capability in atmospheric science.

National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO)

The NCEO is a NERC research centre with more than 80 scientists distributed across leading UK universities and research organisations. With an income of over £8 million per year, we provide the UK with core expertise in Earth Observation science, data sets and merging techniques, and model evaluation to underpin Earth System research and the UK’s international contribution to environmental science. Our scientists work strategically with space agencies, play significant roles in mission planning, and generate internationally-recognised data products from 20 different satellite instruments. Our scientists publish more than 300 research articles every year and contribute to major environmental science reports.

NERC Biomolecular Analysis Facility (NBAF)

The NERC Biomolecular Analysis Facility provides access to high-level genomics, metabolomics and bioinformatics provision through its four nodes. NBAF offers the very latest, class-leading technologies, including next-generation sequencing (Illumina and Pacific Biosciences), SNP genotyping, and high resolution MS and NMR metabolomic platforms. Applications include de novo sequencing, metagenomics, epigenetics, sequence-capture, sequencing-based genotyping and expression profiling (RNAseq, oligoarrays and NanoString). NBAF also supports metabolomics, medium-scale genotyping, bioinformatics and advanced data analysis techniques (genome and transcriptome assembly and annotation, expression analysis, etc.).
